Setting measurable goals

Too often, entrepreneurs suffer from "shiny bright syndrome disease". This means that they get caught up in the newness and excitement of being in business, and end up without clearly defined measurable goals for productivity or profitability.

If your goal (or your customer’s goal) for example, is merely to increase sales, it is not considered to be measurable. Why not? You may be thinking if sales increase, that is good enough.   However, much like the example of water dripping into a bucket and gradually filling it, your customers might not notice that your efforts really have been paying off.   For this reason, we must measure the results. While “sell more merchandise” can not be measured, “increase sales by at least 25%” can. Helping more people can not be measured, yet “helping business owners increase their ezine lists by 100 members per month” can be measured. Do you see the difference?   Therefore, in order to make sure the results are measurable, assign them a reasonable, tangible goal such as:

  • Increase ezine opt-ins by at least 25 sign-ups per month
  • Boost sales by $100 per day by the end of this quarter
  • Add 10 new people to Facebook Fan Page daily
  • Reduce staff turnover by 15%.

Another possibility to ensure the objective is measurable would be to establish and document the starting point. For example, take a survey of customers before launching your plan to boost sales or increase opt-ins. Once you know where you were before you began, you will have something to measure the results against.   Ask questions that are relevant to the business, and you will obtain valuable baseline information on which to compare future results. Remember: If it cannot be measured and does not have a target, then it is not a business goal.
